Quick answer

Eli's sons were worthless men who did not know the Lord. Their corruption stands in stark contrast to the boy Samuel.

Overview

Though priests by birth, Hophni and Phinehas were 'sons of Belial,' utterly godless in heart. To 'not know Yahweh' means they had no true relationship with the God they professed to serve. Their privileged position made their wickedness all the more grievous and set up the judgment that the chapter will pronounce on Eli's house.

Christ at the center

The rise of the anointed king after Israel's failed first choice points to the true Anointed One (Messiah means 'anointed'), the shepherd-king after God's own heart from Bethlehem.

How 1 Samuel 2:12 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
