My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.

Quick answer

John writes to keep believers from sin, yet assures that when we do sin, Jesus the righteous is our Advocate before the Father. Grace does not excuse sin but covers it.

Overview

John balances the call to holiness with comfort for failing believers. The aim is not to sin, yet the reality is that Christians stumble. When they do, Jesus Christ 'the righteous' acts as their Counselor or Advocate (Paraclete) with the Father. His righteousness, not ours, secures our standing, a precious gospel reassurance.
