Paul did not mean avoiding all immoral unbelievers, which would require leaving the world entirely. It matters because Christians are to engage the world, not withdraw from it.

Overview

Clarifying his earlier instruction, Paul explains he never intended believers to shun the greedy, idolatrous, or immoral people of the world at large—that would be impossible and contrary to mission. Like Jesus, Christians live among sinners to bear witness. The distinction prepares for the very different standard he applies within the church family in the next verse.
