Quick answer

The opened abyss pours out smoke that darkens the sun and air. It depicts a spreading spiritual darkness rising from the pit of evil.

Overview

The smoke "like a burning furnace" recalls the destruction of Sodom (Genesis 19:28) and the darkness of judgment. Out of the abyss comes obscuring gloom that blots out light, a fitting image for the confusion and deception evil spreads. This is the demonic realm unleashed, yet still confined to what God allows. It contrasts sharply with the unhindered light of God's presence promised to the redeemed (Revelation 21:23).

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.
