Quick answer

The fifth trumpet shows a fallen star given the key to the abyss. It pictures a powerful spiritual being permitted to release demonic torment by God's authority.

Overview

The "star" fallen from heaven is best understood as an angelic or demonic figure (compare Isaiah 14:12; Luke 10:18; Revelation 9:11). Crucially, the key is "given"—evil acts only by God's permission and within His limits. The abyss is the prison of demonic powers (Luke 8:31; Revelation 20:1-3). The scene reminds believers that even the unleashing of spiritual evil remains under the sovereign control of the One who holds all authority in Christ.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 9:1 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
