Quick answer

Foiled in attacking the woman, the dragon (Satan) turns to wage war on her other offspring—God's faithful people. It shows that hostility against the church flows from Satan's hatred of God.

Overview

Unable to destroy the woman or her child, the dragon directs his fury at the rest of her offspring, identified as those who keep God's commandments and hold to Jesus' testimony. This frames the conflict of the following chapters: persecution of believers is ultimately Satan's war against Christ. The faithful are marked not by escaping hardship but by obedience and witness, sharing in the testimony of Jesus who himself overcame.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 12:17 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
