Quick answer

The psalmist exclaims how lovely God's dwelling place is, the temple of the LORD of Armies. The believer delights in the place of God's presence.

Overview

Psalm 84 is a pilgrim song expressing deep longing for God's house. The loveliness of the dwelling lies in the presence of God Himself, not merely the building. For Christians, this delight points beyond the temple to fellowship with God through Christ, in whom we have access to the Father (cf. Eph. 2:18).

Christ at the center

The Psalms are Christ's own prayer book and a gallery of his portraits — the suffering one of Psalm 22, the risen Lord of Psalm 16, the priest-king of Psalm 110, the Son to whom the nations are given.

How Psalms 84:1 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
