Quick answer

God is the very fountain of life, and only in His light do we see light. All life and true understanding come from Him.

Overview

David confesses God as the source of life itself and the light by which all light is seen, meaning all true knowledge and joy flow from Him. Apart from God there is neither life nor real understanding. This finds glorious fulfillment in Christ, in whom 'was life, and the life was the light of men' (John 1:4), the Light of the world.

Christ at the center

The Psalms are Christ's own prayer book and a gallery of his portraits — the suffering one of Psalm 22, the risen Lord of Psalm 16, the priest-king of Psalm 110, the Son to whom the nations are given.

How Psalms 36:9 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
