Quick answer

As God's servant he asks for understanding to know His testimonies. Servant-hearted dependence is the posture for receiving insight.

Overview

The psalmist again confesses himself God's servant and on that basis requests understanding to know God's testimonies. He recognizes that true knowledge of the word is a gift granted to the humble. This reflects the gospel reality that God reveals His truth to the lowly and gives understanding through His Spirit to those who belong to Christ (Matt. 11:25; 1 Cor. 2:12).

Christ at the center

The Psalms are Christ's own prayer book and a gallery of his portraits — the suffering one of Psalm 22, the risen Lord of Psalm 16, the priest-king of Psalm 110, the Son to whom the nations are given.

How Psalms 119:125 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
