Quick answer

Anyone lacking wisdom—especially to navigate trials—should simply ask God, who gives generously and without scolding. God delights to grant wisdom to those who seek it.

Overview

Having spoken of maturing through trials, James points to the need for wisdom to endure them rightly. God is portrayed as a generous Giver who does not begrudge or reproach those who come to Him. This reflects the Old Testament invitation to seek wisdom (Proverbs 2:6) and points to Christ, in whom are hidden all treasures of wisdom (Colossians 2:3).
