Quick answer

Paul denies having already arrived at perfection and instead presses on to lay hold of Christ's purpose for him. The Christian life is ongoing pursuit, not arrival.

Overview

Against any claim of having attained spiritual completion, Paul models humble, forward-leaning faith. He pursues Christ precisely because Christ first 'took hold' of him on the Damascus road and in salvation. Grace initiates and secures the believer; the believer responds by pressing on, knowing the goal is already grasped by Christ.

Christ at the center

The one who, being in the form of God, emptied himself to the point of death on a cross and was exalted to the name above every name — the joy and prize of the believer.

How Philippians 3:12 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
