Quick answer

By this blessing the priests place God's name on Israel, and God Himself promises to bless them.

Overview

To put God's name on the people marked them as His own, belonging to Him. Crucially, the blessing's power lies not in the priests but in God's own promise to bless. Believers today are likewise sealed with God's name and assured of His blessing in Christ (Rev 22:4).

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
