Quick answer

God commands a census of the Gershonites by their families. Each Levite clan was numbered for its particular service.

Overview

Like the Kohathites, the Gershonites were counted to organize them for their assigned work in the tabernacle. The repetition emphasizes that all the Levites, not just the most prominent, had a vital part in worship. It models how the whole body of God's servants shares in His work, each according to his calling.

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
