Quick answer
Aaron's priestly garments were to be stripped from him and put on Eleazar, and Aaron would die there. The high priesthood passed visibly from father to son.
Overview
The transfer of the sacred vestments signified the handing on of the high priestly office to Eleazar. Aaron dies, but the priesthood continues, for Israel always needed a mediator. Because the Aaronic priests died and had to be replaced, Hebrews contrasts them with Christ, who lives forever and holds His priesthood permanently (Hebrews 7:23-24).
