Quick answer

Reuben's camp is positioned on the south, led by Elizur. The firstborn tribe leads the second division.

Overview

Reuben heads the southern camp, retaining a place of honor as Jacob's firstborn even though the birthright privileges had passed to others. The southern position assigns Reuben the second division of the camp. The arrangement reflects God's ordering of His people with both honor and accountability.

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
