Quick answer

God directs that one leader from each tribe spy out Canaan, the land he is giving Israel. The mission rests on God's promise of the land.

Overview

The LORD commands a representative from every tribe to scout Canaan, which he describes as already given to Israel. The emphasis on God's gift means the spies should confirm, not question, his promise. The coming unbelief will be all the more culpable because the land was assured.

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
