Quick answer

Nahshon son of Amminadab leads Judah, the tribe through which Messiah would come. His inclusion links the census to the line of promise.

Overview

Nahshon stands in the genealogy of David and ultimately of Jesus Christ (Ruth 4:20; Matt. 1:4). Judah's leader is significant because this tribe held the scepter promise (Gen. 49:10) and would later lead the camp. Even an administrative list quietly carries the thread of redemptive history toward Christ.

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.

How Numbers 1:7 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
