Quick answer

The King answers that failing the least of these was failing him. Neglect of his people is neglect of Christ himself.

Overview

The King restates his solidarity with the lowly: what was withheld from them was withheld from him. Their neglect of the vulnerable proves the unreality of any claim to know him. The verse seals the principle that love for Christ and love for his needy people cannot be separated. It is a solemn warning against a heartless, fruitless religion.
