Quick answer

True greatness in the kingdom belongs to whoever humbles himself like a child. Jesus redefines greatness as lowliness, not status.

Overview

Answering the disciples' question directly, Jesus says the greatest is the most humble. This reverses worldly measures of importance and points to the character of Christ himself, who humbled himself even to the cross (Philippians 2:5-8). Greatness in God's kingdom is measured by self-lowering love.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 18:4 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
