Quick answer
What fills the heart determines what comes out in word and deed; the mouth speaks from the heart's abundance. Our speech reveals our inner character.
Overview
Jesus locates the source of conduct in the heart's hidden treasure, whether good or evil. Words are diagnostic of the heart's true condition. Since no one can simply manufacture a good heart, this verse drives us to seek the new heart God promises and gives through Christ and His Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26).
