Quick answer

Anything irrevocably "devoted" to the LORD could not be sold or redeemed, being most holy. This was the most solemn form of dedication.

Overview

A "devoted thing" (herem) was given over to God absolutely, beyond the reach of redemption that applied to ordinary vows. Such things were most holy and belonged wholly and permanently to the LORD. This category marks the seriousness of total consecration and foreshadows the complete, unreserved devotion God's people owe to him in Christ.

Christ at the center

Every sacrifice, every priest, and every day of atonement points beyond itself to the one perfect offering and the great High Priest who, by his own blood, makes the unclean holy once for all.

How Leviticus 27:28 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
