There in the Lord’s presence he will put the incense on the burning coals so that a cloud of incense will rise over the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—that rests on the Ark of the Covenant. If he follows these instructions, he will not die.

Quick answer

The incense forms a cloud over the mercy seat so Aaron will not die. The smoke veils God's presence to protect the priest.

Overview

Aaron places the incense on the fire so its cloud covers the mercy seat, sparing his life before the holy God. The smoke acknowledges that no one can gaze unguarded on God's glory and live. This points to Christ, whose mediation alone allows sinners to come near the Father without being consumed.

Christ at the center

Every sacrifice, every priest, and every day of atonement points beyond itself to the one perfect offering and the great High Priest who, by his own blood, makes the unclean holy once for all.

How Leviticus 16:13 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
