Quick answer

Just as God's good promises came true, so His threatened judgments will fall if they disobey. It warns that God's word cuts both ways.

Overview

Joshua reasons that the same God who faithfully gave good things will just as surely bring the warned evils upon a covenant-breaking people. God's faithfulness includes His justice as well as His blessing. This solemn truth calls Israel to take both the promises and the warnings of God with utmost seriousness.

Christ at the center

Joshua — the same name as Jesus, 'the LORD saves' — leads God's people into their inheritance, a shadow of the greater Joshua who brings us into the true rest and the promised land that remains.

How Joshua 23:15 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
