Quick answer

Among those slain was Balaam son of Beor, the soothsayer, killed by Israel with the sword.

Overview

Balaam, hired to curse Israel but compelled to bless them (Numbers 22-24), had then counseled Moab to seduce Israel into sin (Numbers 31:16). His death by the sword is recorded as a fitting judgment on his greed and treachery. The New Testament holds him up as a warning against loving the wages of unrighteousness (2 Peter 2:15; Jude 11).
