Quick answer
Instead of obeying, Jonah flees toward Tarshish, the opposite direction, trying to escape God's call. It matters because it exposes the futility and folly of running from God.
Overview
Tarshish, likely in the far western Mediterranean, represented the edge of the known world, dramatizing how far Jonah wished to flee. The repeated phrase 'from the presence of Yahweh' shows he was not merely avoiding a task but resisting the Lord Himself, even though no one can flee God's presence (Psalm 139:7-10). The threefold 'went down' (to Joppa, into the ship, and later into the sea and the fish) traces a downward spiral of disobedience that only grace will reverse.
