Quick answer

Pilate hands Jesus over to be crucified, and the soldiers lead him away. The unjust sentence is now set in motion.

Overview

Bowing to pressure, Pilate delivers Jesus to crucifixion, though he had thrice declared him innocent. The handing over fulfills God's redemptive purpose announced long before (Acts 2:23). What looks like the triumph of injustice is in fact the path by which the Lamb goes to bear the sins of the world.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 19:16 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
