Quick answer

Knowing all that would happen, Jesus steps forward and asks whom they seek. He takes the initiative in his own arrest.

Overview

John emphasizes Jesus' full foreknowledge and control: he is not a passive victim but willingly goes out to meet his captors. By asking 'Who are you looking for?' he presents himself rather than being hunted down. This portrays the sovereign self-giving of Christ, who lays down his life of his own accord (10:18) in obedience to the Father.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 18:4 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
