Quick answer

Jesus has given his disciples the Father's word, and the world hates them because they are not of the world, just as he is not. Following Christ sets believers apart.

Overview

Having received God's word, the disciples now share Jesus' status as those who do not belong to the world's value system, and so they share his rejection. The world's hatred of believers flows from its hatred of Christ (15:18-19). The verse prepares disciples to expect opposition and roots their distinct identity in their union with their Lord.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 17:14 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
