Quick answer

Jesus promises his disciples peace in him amid the world's trouble, because he has overcome the world. This is the climactic encouragement of the upper-room discourse.

Overview

Jesus contrasts the oppression his followers will face in the world with the peace they have 'in me.' His command to take heart rests on a completed victory: 'I have overcome the world,' spoken before the cross yet certain of its outcome. Through his death and resurrection, Christ conquers sin, death, and the world's hostility, so believers can face tribulation with settled confidence in their victorious Lord.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 16:33 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
