Quick answer

Jesus, the light, will only be present a little longer, so He urges people to walk in the light before darkness overtakes them. It matters because the time to respond to Him is now, not indefinite.

Overview

As His public ministry closes, Jesus warns that opportunity to believe is limited; to walk in darkness is to lose one's way spiritually. He presents Himself as the light of the world (cf. 8:12), the only sure guide. The gospel call is urgent: receive Christ while He may be found, for those without Him stumble in spiritual blindness.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 12:35 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
