Quick answer
In Zedekiah's ninth year Nebuchadnezzar and his whole army besieged Jerusalem, building siege works all around it. The long-prophesied judgment had begun.
Overview
The precise dating, ninth year, tenth month, tenth day, marks a day later remembered in fasting by the exiles (Zechariah 8:19). The encircling siege fulfilled Jeremiah's warnings that resistance was futile because God Himself had ordained the city's fall. What looked like mere geopolitics was the outworking of covenant curses pronounced long before in Deuteronomy.
