Quick answer

Edom's overthrow will resemble Sodom and Gomorrah, left utterly uninhabited. Its judgment will be total and lasting.

Overview

By comparing Edom to Sodom and Gomorrah, the prophet signals complete, irreversible destruction (Genesis 19). This recurring image in Jeremiah marks the severest form of divine judgment. It also foreshadows the final, decisive judgment that awaits all persistent rebellion against God (2 Peter 2:6).
