Quick answer

God shows steadfast love to thousands yet justly visits sin's consequences on later generations; He is the great and mighty LORD of Armies. It holds together divine mercy and justice.

Overview

Echoing God's self-revelation at Sinai (Exod. 34:6-7), Jeremiah confesses both God's vast covenant love and His righteous judgment on sin. He magnifies the greatness and might of the LORD of Armies. This balance of mercy and justice finds its resolution at the cross, where God remains just while justifying sinners through Christ (Rom. 3:26).
