Quick answer

God restates the covenant heart: 'You shall be my people, and I will be your God.' Restoration culminates in restored relationship.

Overview

This covenant formula recurs throughout Scripture as the essence of God's purpose with His people. The goal of all the promised restoration is renewed fellowship between God and Israel. It anticipates the new covenant in Christ, where God dwells with His people forever (Revelation 21:3).

Christ at the center

Against the failure of false shepherds Jeremiah promises the Righteous Branch, 'The LORD our righteousness,' and the new covenant written on the heart and sealed in the blood of Christ.
