Quick answer

God plainly declares He never sent these prophets; their false words in His name will lead to the people's ruin. Speaking presumptuously for God is a deadly sin.

Overview

The decisive mark of false prophecy is that God did not send them, yet they claimed His name. Their lies would result in exile and the perishing of both them and their hearers. God holds false prophets accountable for the destruction they cause (Deuteronomy 18:20). The seriousness of misrepresenting God warns all who would speak in His name to do so faithfully.
