Quick answer

God says these men have taken idols into their hearts and set up stumbling blocks of iniquity, so should He even be consulted by them?

Overview

Though physically present to inquire, the elders cherish idols inwardly, making genuine inquiry impossible. God exposes that idolatry of the heart blocks fellowship with Him. It teaches that He looks at inward devotion, not outward religious motions, and will not be sought by a heart still wedded to sin.
