Quick answer

Scripture is not empty when it speaks of God's jealous yearning for his people. God passionately desires our undivided loyalty.

Overview

This verse is notably difficult; the exact Scripture cited is uncertain and the Greek can be read two ways. Faithful interpreters differ over whether the spirit that yearns jealously is God's Spirit longing for us, or the human spirit prone to envy. Either way, James appeals to God's rightful, jealous claim on his people, consistent with the divine jealousy expressed throughout Scripture (Exodus 20:5).
