Quick answer

God called Israel His people and children and became their Savior. It matters because God graciously claimed an undeserving people as His own.

Overview

God's expectation that they 'will not deal falsely' expresses His covenant hope for His children, even though the following verses recall their failure. His becoming 'their Savior' shows that the relationship rests on His initiative and grace. This anticipates the gospel, where God adopts believers as children and saves them in Christ despite their unworthiness (John 1:12; Titus 3:4-5).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 63:8 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
