Quick answer

God declares that the day of vengeance and the year of redemption were set in His heart. It matters because judgment on evil and rescue of His people are two sides of one saving purpose.

Overview

The pairing of 'vengeance' and 'redeemed' echoes 61:2 and shows that God's judgment serves His redemptive ends; the same act that punishes oppressors delivers the oppressed. These purposes were long held in God's heart, not arbitrary. The cross supremely unites judgment and redemption, where sin is judged and sinners are saved (Romans 3:25-26).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 63:4 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
