Quick answer

Their sins include rebelling against the Lord, turning from God, and speaking lies from the heart. Sin is fundamentally a betrayal of God Himself.

Overview

The confession specifies transgressing and denying the Lord, turning away from God, and uttering falsehood conceived in the heart. Sin is exposed not merely as social wrong but as rebellion against God. This vertical dimension of sin clarifies why reconciliation must come from God, accomplished through Christ who reconciles rebels to their offended Creator.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 59:13 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
