Quick answer

Honoring the Sabbath by delighting in God rather than pursuing one's own pleasure is the path to blessing. Right Sabbath-keeping reflects a heart that treasures God above self.

Overview

The Lord calls His people to keep the Sabbath as a delight, setting aside their own pursuits to honor His holy day. The emphasis falls on the heart's gladness in God, not mere rule-keeping. Christians see the Sabbath principle fulfilled in Christ, who gives true rest, and they delight in Him as their ultimate Sabbath rest (Heb 4).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 58:13 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
