Quick answer

To the afflicted and uncomforted city, God promises to rebuild it with precious stones and sapphire foundations. It matters because God transforms suffering into surpassing beauty and glory.

Overview

The storm-tossed, comfortless people are promised a future of dazzling splendor, their very foundations adorned with jewels. The imagery conveys both God's care and the surpassing glory He bestows on the redeemed. Revelation echoes this in describing the New Jerusalem with jeweled foundations (Rev. 21:18–21), the ultimate fulfillment in the city of God.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 54:11 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
