Quick answer

God declares His righteousness and salvation are near at hand, and the distant nations wait expectantly for His saving arm.

Overview

God's deliverance is imminent, and even the far islands look to Him with hope, trusting His mighty arm. Righteousness and salvation here mean God's saving intervention for His people and beyond. The waiting nations foreshadow the Gentiles who put their hope in Christ, the arm of the LORD revealed for salvation (Romans 15:12).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 51:5 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
