Quick answer

The Servant calls the distant nations to listen, declaring that God called and named him before birth, marking him out for a worldwide mission.

Overview

This begins the second Servant Song. The Servant, called from the womb like a prophet (cf. Jeremiah 1:5), addresses not just Israel but the far islands and peoples, signaling a mission reaching the whole earth. Christians read this as fulfilled supremely in Christ, whose name and saving work were appointed before His coming and who gathers people from every nation.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 49:1 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
