Limitless Word
I will lead blind Israel down a new path, guiding them along an unfamiliar way. I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them.

Quick answer

God promises to lead the blind along unfamiliar paths, turning darkness to light and rough places smooth, and pledges not to forsake them. It assures the helpless that God Himself guides and never abandons His own.

Overview

The 'blind' here are God's own people, spiritually unable to see the way forward in exile. The LORD personally takes them by paths they could not find and transforms their darkness into light. This gracious promise of unfailing guidance anticipates Christ, the light of the world, who opens blind eyes and never forsakes those He redeems.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 42:16 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
