Quick answer

God's glory will be revealed for all humanity to see, guaranteed by the certainty of His own word.

Overview

The climax of the highway-preparation oracle (40:3-5): when the Lord comes, His glory becomes visible to all flesh, not Israel alone. The closing assurance 'the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it' grounds the promise in God's unfailing word. The New Testament applies this passage to John the Baptist preparing the way for Christ (Luke 3:4-6), in whom the glory of God was supremely revealed.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 40:5 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
