Quick answer

Israel relents, sending a gift of choice produce to win the lord's favor. His shift from refusal to action shows reluctant trust.

Overview

Jacob's "if it must be so" marks his surrender to necessity and his attempt to do what he can, sending balm, honey, spices, and nuts as a present. The carefully chosen gifts reflect both diplomatic wisdom and a father's love. His yielding allows the family to move toward the reunion God has prepared.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
