Quick answer

Isaac plants crops and reaps a hundredfold harvest, because Yahweh blessed him.

Overview

In a famine-prone land, Isaac's extraordinary harvest is attributed directly to the Lord's blessing, not merely good farming. This visibly fulfills God's covenant promise to bless him (v. 3). Material abundance here serves as a sign of God's faithfulness to the patriarchal line through which the Redeemer would come.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
