Quick answer

After listing more Canaanite clans, the text notes that the Canaanite families spread abroad. The descendants of Canaan multiplied across the region.

Overview

The final Canaanite groups are named, and the verse observes how these families dispersed throughout the land. This spreading sets the geographic stage for Israel's later entry into Canaan. The account reminds us that even the dispersion of nations lies within God's providence as He moves history toward redemption in Christ.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
