Quick answer

The flesh and the Spirit are in constant opposition, so believers cannot simply do whatever they want. The Christian experiences a real inner conflict between sin and the Spirit.

Overview

Paul describes the ongoing war within the believer between the flesh, the sinful nature, and the indwelling Spirit. These opposing forces mean the Christian cannot live in unhindered self-will. While the conflict is real and lifelong, the surrounding verses make clear that the Spirit gives victory to those who walk in step with Him.

Christ at the center

Christ became a curse for us to redeem us from the law's curse, that we might receive the Spirit and be sons — justified by faith in him, not by works.

How Galatians 5:17 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
